The Department of Education prepares students at Richmond to enter the classroom as teachers after graduation. The program draws students from across the disciplines and is designed to turn out teachers who have a strong background in educational theory and practice but who also are knowledgeable in another academic discipline. The program results in a:

The department prepares students to teach in elementary and secondary education, art, biology, chemistry, English, French, German, history and social science, Latin, mathematics, physics or Spanish. Students who complete the program receive a major in their field of specialty and a minor in education and are well prepared to pass state and federally mandated exams and receive licensure in Virginia, as well as 48 states, territories and the District of Columbia, which have reciprocity programs with Virginia.

Students don’t become good teachers just by being in the classroom. The department emphasizes experiential learning opportunities that expand students’ worlds and ultimately, make them better teachers. All students complete a student-teaching experience, but other opportunities to learn outside the classroom come in the form of independent research opportunities, internships and study abroad.
